Because ergot affects all grains as well as grasses, Secale will cover all ergot species generically, given the fact that the properties of all grasses and grains in the materia medica do not differ very much, except in concomitants and modalities (compare Boericke's Materia Medica - alfalfa (Medicago sativa), stargrass (Aletris farinosa), sweet vernal grass (Anoxanthum), oats (Avena sativa), buckwheat (Fagopyrum), goose grass (Galium aparine), knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare), and corn (Stigmata maydis). The first sign of infection is during flowering when yellowish droplets of sugary slime are produced. (3)
